Welcome
The Western Psychological Association was founded in 1921 for the purpose of stimulating the exchange of scientific and professional ideas and, in so doing to enhance interest in the processes of research and scholarship in the behavioral sciences. Membership in the Western Psychological Association is open to both students and professionals who wish to support these goals and who would like to be a part of the network that we have created to further them.

Final Convention Notes
Here is a link to the latest draft of the convention program that you can use to plan your meeting activities.
Use #wpasfo in a tweet to communicate with others about the convention. Recommend talks to attend, ask questions, recommend restaurants, or look to share a room. Search on #wpasfo to see what people are saying.
The hotel concierge desk will have information on the shuttle to downtown Burlingame and will help you with restaurant reservations. Here is a link to the many restaurants in the area. Several are within walking distance of the hotel; others are in downtown Burlingame:
http://www.tripadvisor.com/Restaurants-g32124-Burlingame_California.html
Registration will open at 4pm on Wednesday for pre-registered attendees only. We will open for everyone at 7am on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, and 7:30 on Sunday.
The hotel will be setting up a quick lunch service in the atrium. It will be cash only. Lunch will also be available in the sports bar and the atrium restaurant.
Overflow hotel reservations.
The Hyatt Regency is sold out and the Marriott overflow room block is close to selling out. We have obtained an overflow room rate at the Crowne Plaza near the Hyatt. To make reservations using the WPA group code, use this Crowne Plaza link.
The Hyatt Regency may be full and so unable to process your reservation request. We have obtained a WPA rate at the Marriott hotel that is about a 10 minute walk from the Hyatt. It uses the same airport shuttle as the Hyatt (look for the shuttle that says Hyatt and Marriott on the side). Here is the link for completing your reservation at the Marriott

Please let us know if you discover errors that need to be corrected.
New Look for Membership and Registration Forms
We have a new membership and registration system. Links will take you to a:
- Membership Form
- WPA Events Page
- Donation Form
The events page allows you to register for the convention – the convention registration form now allows you to also register for the Terman Teaching Conference and the Statistics Workshops. We realize that most of you will want to register later for those so we have separate registration forms available also. Go directly to the events page if you wish to register as a non-member. If you wish to register as a member, you must first sign up for membership using the membership form.
Not sure if you have paid your membership or registered for the convention? Try one of these:
- Go to the Membership page and choose the "login / member profile" option. Type in your email address and password. Members will successfully see their member information. If the system does not recognize you, click on the link that says you forgot your password. Members will receive information in their mailbox. Nonmembers will see a message that the system does not recognize the email address at all.
- Select the link for Event Registration and select the registration option for the 2012 convention. You will be asked for your email address. If you have registered, a message will appear saying that you have registered with a button to login to see details and make changes. If you have not registered, you will see options available to you.
- You can send email to the WPA office requesting information about your membership and registration status.
Statistics Workshop Program Announced

Testing Moderation Hypotheses using Multiple Group Structural Equation Modeling: Testing Moderation Hypotheses
Jodie Ullman, CSU San Bernardino
Multiple group SEM techniques offer rich methods to test all different types of moderation (interaction) hypotheses. Through the use of multiple group structural equation models it is possible to test whether or not a variable say, ethnicity or gender, actually moderates, not just regression paths or means, but also the composition of the factors/constructs themselves. For example, does the composition of a construct like acculturation change as a function of ethnicity or does a construct of risky sex behavior change as a function of gender?
In this workshop we begin by exploring interactions using measured and latent variables in standard single group structural equation models. After a fairly brief exploration of these models we will turn to multiple group SEM models and look at a variety of types of moderation/interaction hypotheses. Examples using a variety of structural equation modeling software packages will be included. It would be helpful if participants had a little experience with single structural equation models.
Friday, 8:30-10:30
Introduction to Latent Class Analysis in Mplus
Karen Nylund-Gibson, University of California, Santa Barbara
Latent class analysis (LCA) has become a useful analytic tool for Psychological researchers because of its ability to empirically derive latent groups of individuals based on response profiles on a set of outcomes. Conceptually similar to cluster analysis, LCA is a model-based approach to group individuals which also allows us to predict membership into the groups, as well as explore consequences. The purpose of this session is to provide attendees with a gentle introduction into the cross-sectional LCA models with categorical and continuous outcome (sometimes called latent profile analysis), provide examples of how to specify these models in the Mplus program, and how to interpret and write up results. Modeling syntax and annotated output will be provided.
Saturday, 8:45-10:45
An Introduction to Item Response Theory
Andrew Ainsworth, CSU Northridge
The focus of this workshop will be on applications of Item Response Theory (IRT) models to measuring psychological phenomenon. The workshop will begin with a brief discussion of classical and modern test theory and will then focus on introducing basic Item Response Theory (IRT) models, assumptions and procedures. After establishing IRT fundamentals the modeling techniques will be illustrated conceptually using IRT software (e.g., Bilog-MG, Testfact and EQSIRT) and data sets will be utilized throughout the workshop as examples. Workshop attendees will learn 1) basic IRT concepts, assumptions and procedures, 2) how IRT models can be applied to answer questions concerning psychological data, and 3) why psychologists should be using IRT models more frequently.
Sunday, 8:30-10:30
Choosing Your Multivariate Technique
Barbara Tabachnick, CSU, Northridge
One of the stickiest issues in multivariate statistics is deciding which technique to use. This workshop will present a scheme for deciding on a multivariate technique based on dissection of a problem once an analysis goal is determined: 1) Finding significance of group differences, 2) Analyzing relationships among variables; 3) Predicting group membership, 4) Analyzing time course of events; or 5) Determining structure of a set of variables. For each goal, the kind of number of independent and dependent variables is used to help determine the most useful technique. An example of each of the techniques is then demonstrated, with a description of the example, numbers and types of the variables in the example, specific goals of analysis, illustrative output, and a brief interpretation of the results.
